Add in the fact that the cost to switch is pretty low: just download another client and get your games there instead, and I think GOG Galaxy actually has a good chance at developing a strong foothold. PC gamers are an independent lot as a rule, and there's no love lost for DRM. Valve enjoys more goodwill than more or less any company on Earth, due to their charmingly nerdy style and occasional forays into actual game development, but as recent mod snafus have proven, they're beginning to develop a little bit of a reputation as the evil empire of PC gaming - an inevitable consequence of holding all the cards. As usual, it can be refreshing for any company to talk about things like that in such simple terms. According to the Verge, all of its added features are entirely optional, which the company says will encourage it to make them all as good as possible: they should be good enough that people use them voluntarily. It's that this GOG is pitching this concept as user-centric from the first, and that's a big deal for a lot of people. The key to the DRM-free thing isn't even the fact that it's free of DRM, though that's a nice side-effect. It comes with what we expect from a service like this: one-click installation, friends lists, achievements, matchmaking, chat and the like. ![]() ![]() I've used it to download any number of classic adventure games and Bullfrog-era wacky sims, and it's worked well every time, usually at some ridiculously low price. GOG, a subsidiary of Witcher developer CD Prokekt Red, is a fine service. It has a long, long way to go before it comes anything close to Steam, but isn't it time we had a little choice? At least until now: games website GOG (formerly Good Old Games, which made its name selling classic games) launches GOG Galaxy today, an attempt to make a Steam-like service with GOG's trademark DRM-free policies. "Competitors" come in flavors like EA's Origin and Ubisoft's Uplay, and that barely even counts. If you want PC games, you buy them through Steam. But there's no question that Valve has a practical monopoly on PC games. It features a visually-stunning dashboard where you can view your titles and achievements in one place. In 2014, the company released GOG Galaxy as a free gaming client to rival the likes of Steam. That may be a little simplistic - Valve's ubiquitous PC gaming service got that way because it's simple to use, rarely screws up, and keeps everything in order without any hassle. CD Projekt launched Good for Games in 2008, which officially became known as GOG.com. ![]()
